They Counted Kyrie Out. He Kept Fighting.
When Davina thinks about the first six months of her grandson Kyrie’s life, she remembers moments no family should ever have to face.
Kyrie was born at just 25 weeks and spent the first six months of his life in the NICU. From the beginning, he faced one medical complication after another. One of the most serious was an infection in his intestines.
There were moments when his condition became so critical that his doctors believed there was nothing more they could do.
“They basically counted him out,” Davina says. “They gave us a certain number of days before they expected him to leave this world.”
But they didn’t know Kyrie.
And they didn’t know the plans God had for him.
Day after day, Kyrie kept fighting. When it seemed there was no reason to believe he would get better, he did. When there appeared to be no more hope, he kept improving.
“He made it through,” Davina says.
After six months in the hospital, Kyrie finally came home.
For Davina and his mother, that moment should have been pure celebration. But bringing Kyrie home marked the beginning of an entirely new chapter—and a new set of challenges.
“I don’t know if Kyrie was so used to the hospital environment, but once he came home, he cried almost every waking moment,” his mom says. “Everything was different—the sounds, the smells, the people, the environment.”
It took about three months for Kyrie to adjust to life at home.
Today, routine is an important part of their lives. Feedings, strengthening exercises and daily care happen on a schedule. Davina works every day to keep Kyrie comfortable, mobile and as active as possible. The consistency helps him know what to expect—and helps Davina navigate the many demands of caring for her grandson.
But no matter how much love a parent has, no family should have to navigate a journey like this alone.
That is where Better2gether has made a difference for Davina and Kyrie.
Through Better2gether’s Moms program, Davina found an opportunity to step away from the demands of caregiving, spend time with moms and caregivers and simply experience a day filled with fun, laughter and connection.
For a parent and grandparent whose days can revolve around appointments, therapies, medications, routines and uncertainty, that connection can mean everything.
“The Moms program was a day filled with fun, laughter and excitement,” Davina says. “I’m looking forward to participating in more events because they are so helpful to me and my family.”
More than an event, it gave Davina something every parent and grandparent needs: the reminder that she is not alone.
“This is a wonderful journey God has given me,” she says. “Having Better2gether’s support and the strength I receive from other parents and caregivers helps me keep going.”
Your Support Helps Families Keep Going
Davina and Kyrie’s story is about resilience. It is about faith. It is about a little boy who refused to give up.
But it is also about what happens when a family has someone beside them.
For families raising children with rare and chronic medical conditions, the journey can feel overwhelming and isolating. Better2gether helps change that by connecting parents and caregivers with support, resources, community and other families who truly understand.
Your support makes that connection possible.
Because sometimes a family doesn't need someone to fix everything. They need someone to say, “We’re here. You’re not alone. We’ll walk with you.”
For Davina, that support has helped her keep going.
And with your help, Better2gether can be there for the next family, too.
