Meet the Next Generation of Change-makers from VCU

Passionate, dedicated, and full of heart—these students are helping Better2gether bring joy, connection, and care to families of children with rare and chronic illnesses.

Better2gether is fortunate to have an incredible group of student volunteers from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) who bring their time, talent, and energy to help create meaningful experiences for families of children with rare and chronic illnesses. Their efforts go far beyond lending a helping hand—they are an essential part of the heart and community that make Better2gether so special.

For Talia Scott, a Health Services major at VCU, volunteering with Better2gether has been both a learning experience and a source of personal fulfillment. “Better2gether has shown genuine dedication to serving its families,” she shared. “The organization makes it a priority to connect with both parents and children, ensuring their voices are heard when planning events. For many of these families, it can be challenging to find events that truly meet their child’s needs. Better2gether ensures that every child enjoys an experience that is tailored to them.”

Talia says her experience planning events has given her valuable insight into project management and healthcare operations—skills that align with her career goals in healthcare administration. “It’s been so rewarding to see the impact our work has on families. It’s strengthened my professional skills, but even more importantly, it’s deepened my appreciation for how meaningful community service can be.”

Leon Farley IV, another dedicated VCU volunteer, says the experience has helped him grow both personally and professionally. “Volunteering with Better2gether has shown me how much teamwork and compassion can impact families who need support,” Leon explained. “It’s also strengthened my interest in working in healthcare and community service in the future.” For Leon, the opportunity to connect directly with families at events and see the joy on the children’s faces is what makes it all worthwhile. “It’s a great way to give back while learning skills that will help in any career,” he added.

For Albert Sahakyan, volunteering with Better2gether carries a special personal connection. “My younger brother has NF1, so being able to support other kids with complex medical conditions means a lot to me,” he shared. Albert, who got involved with Better2gether through a service learning class, said he was drawn to the organization because of its commitment to children with medical complexity and their families. “It’s special because we don’t just raise money—we bring families together and make sure they have everything they need to feel supported.”

Albert’s favorite memory so far has been volunteering at movie night, serving popcorn alongside his friend Rock. “There were so many cute and polite kids,” he said. “It made me happy watching Finding Nemo with them and seeing them smile. Those moments remind me why this work matters.”

Whether it’s helping organize events, creating family-friendly experiences, or simply spreading joy, these students represent the best of what it means to serve others. They are learning, growing, and leading by example—showing how much of an impact compassion and involvement can make in the lives of others.

As Talia summed it up, “No matter what your passion may be, there’s an organization out there that will value your contributions—and your involvement can truly make a meaningful impact.”

Better2gether is grateful for all of our VCU student volunteers who give their time and hearts so generously. Together, they help make every Better2gether event a place where families feel supported, included, and seen.
