Finding Their Way in a New Home: Vayda’s Story

Imagine moving to a new state, leaving behind your support system, while caring for a child with specialized medical needs. Every decision feels overwhelming, from deciphering complicated medical terminology to managing a schedule filled with therapies and doctor visits. For Vayda’s family, this was their reality.

At just 4 years old, Vayda has already faced more challenges than most children her age. Diagnosed with Agenesis of Corpus Callosum, microcephaly, global developmental delay, and bilateral strabismus, she requires consistent therapies, specialized medical care, and daily support at home.

When the family relocated from Florida to Virginia, they didn’t know anyone and were unfamiliar with the Virginia Medicaid Waiver system—a vital resource for families like theirs. Yet, amidst these challenges, parents are not alone. A supportive community stands ready to offer guidance, empathy, and companionship. That’s where Better2gether’s Family Navigation Program stepped in.

Our Family Navigator worked closely with Vayda’s mom, walking her step-by-step through the complicated waiver application process. Thanks to this support, Vayda was approved for Medicaid, which now covers the cost of her therapies, medical appointments, and procedures. In addition, her family receives weekly hours to hire in-home care for Vayda, and they now have access to $10,000 each year for assistive technology and environmental modifications to make daily life safer and easier.

For Vayda’s family, this support means peace of mind, financial relief, and the ability to focus on what matters most watching their daughter grow and thrive.

The Family Navigation Program helps families like Vayda’s transition more smoothly, connect with resources, and feel less alone in their journey. Because of donors like you, families don’t have to face these challenges on their own.
