Finding Strength and Support: Lauren's Journey

At just ten years old, Lauren has a big personality. Her mom, Jalesa, describes her as sweet, sassy, and full of life. Some of her favorite activities include listening to music and painting.

But their family’s journey has not been an easy one. Living with a rare and complex illness, Lauren requires round-the-clock care. Her mom, a dedicated single parent, makes sure that Lauren gets the best care possible despite the many challenges they face.

Lauren’s medical needs are extensive. This past August alone, she was hospitalized four times due to RSV, an upper respiratory illness, COVID, and pneumonia. She sees multiple specialists, requiring frequent medical appointments that can be difficult to navigate, especially with transportation challenges. But Lauren’s mom, her dad, and extended family members work together to advocate for the care she deserves.

For Jalesa, one of the biggest lessons she has learned as a parent of a child with complex needs is that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. “It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to try and think things through. Just don’t beat yourself up,” she shares. And when it comes to the community, Jalesa has one request: Inclusion. “Just because you’ve never heard of a condition, be open to new knowledge and include us. We shouldn’t have to force ourselves to fit in.”

Better2gether has been a meaningful source of support for Lauren’s family. “Better2gether does more reaching out to me than I do to them!” Jalesa says. “They let us know that they’re there. They include us.” At the Children’s Hospital of Richmond’s Complex Care Clinic, Lauren receives coordinated care, making medical visits more efficient and accessible. As the weather in Richmond warms up, Jalesa looks forward to attending more Better2gether’s events, where she can connect with other families who understand this journey.

Lauren’s story highlights the resilience of families raising children with rare and complex illnesses. It also serves as a reminder that support, inclusion, and advocacy really can make a difference. Thanks to Better2gether, families like Lauren’s don’t have to navigate this journey alone. They have a community that truly cares.
