Family Spotlight: Life, Love, and Resilience with Kylie

Kylie was born with hydrocephalus, which affected the development of half her brain, resulting in spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and blindness with possible cortical visual impairment (CVI). From just 4 months old, Kylie and her twin sister, Kelsee, joined our family as foster children, beginning a journey filled with medical challenges, surgeries, and daily care that few could imagine.

Kylie’s life is full of routines and vigilance. Her days start early at 6:15 a.m., from waking and dressing her to preparing for the school bus—though recent increases in seizure activity have kept her home under constant supervision. Each afternoon involves carefully transferring her into specialized seating to prevent wounds, providing tube feedings, medications, and overnight care. Kylie experiences seizures daily, and her vagal nerve stimulator requires immediate attention when needed.

Her siblings have grown up alongside Kylie, learning firsthand what it means to care for someone so dependent. Kelsee has faced challenges of her own, and Tiffany, now 17, has been inspired by Kylie’s resilience to pursue a career in special education. Despite the obstacles, the family prioritizes engagement with the world outside the home, attending special needs events and creating opportunities for connection with other families.

Accessibility and safety are constant concerns. From purchasing handicap-accessible vehicles to remodeling a bathroom, the family has invested heavily to ensure Kylie can live safely and fully.

As an older adoptive mother, balancing her own medical needs with Kylie’s care is a daily worry—yet love, commitment, and a strong support system keep them going.

Better2gether has been a lifeline. From emotional support during hospital stays to thoughtful goodie bags that give Kylie something to enjoy and her mother peace of mind, our staff has been there every step of the way. “Jenn has always been there whenever I needed someone to talk to,” Kylie’s mother shares. “I appreciate that so much. Thanks for all you do from the bottom of my heart.”

Through love, courage, and connection, Kylie and her family demonstrate the power of togetherness—and the profound impact of a community that truly cares.
