Community Spotlight A Heartfelt Connection The Jewish Community at Avery Point and Evelyn Glasser
When Evelyn Glasser first introduced her friends at Avery Point to Better2gether, she wasn’t just sharing the name of a local nonprofit—she was sharing a piece of her heart.
Evelyn’s daughter, Debbie, has been a longtime volunteer and former Board President for Better2gether RVA. Through her daughter’s dedication, Evelyn and her husband Bob became deeply familiar with the organization’s mission: supporting families raising children with medical complexities. The Glasser family has been involved as donors, volunteers, and passionate advocates—so when the Jewish Community at Avery Point Senior Living began looking for a way to make a local impact, Evelyn knew exactly where to turn.
“We wanted to support an organization that’s really making a difference for people right here in Richmond,” Evelyn shared. “Better2gether does that in such a meaningful way—filling a need that’s often overlooked.”
That heartfelt connection led to the launch of a holiday toy drive to benefit children receiving care at the Complex Care Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Richmond. After a conversation with Better2gether’s Executive Director Stephanie Becker, the idea came to life. Stephanie shared that children facing chronic illness often spend long hours in clinics and hospitals—so books, toys, and games can offer much-needed moments of joy and distraction. The Avery Point Jewish Community jumped in with open hearts.
“Our residents responded with so much generosity,” Evelyn said. “It was beautiful to see the outpouring of support.”
“Even small acts of kindness can have a big impact. It’s gratifying to know our efforts are helping families right here in our own backyard.” — Evelyn Glasser
The toy drive was just the beginning. What has stood out to the Avery Point community—and inspired them to stay involved—is the way Better2gether brings comfort, connection, and critical resources to families who are often navigating complex, overwhelming medical journeys.
“Raising a child with a rare or complex illness can feel incredibly isolating,” Evelyn said. “Better2gether steps in with both practical help and a sense of community. It’s truly life-changing.”
To other community groups considering a partnership with Better2gether, Evelyn is enthusiastic in her encouragement: “Better2gether values every contribution, no matter the size. You feel like your involvement matters—and it does.”
Since moving to Avery Point, Evelyn has seen firsthand the generosity and compassion that define its residents. She believes that giving back through causes like Better2gether not only supports those in need but also strengthens the bonds within their own community.
The Jewish Community at Avery Point has shown just how powerful a close-knit group can be when united by a common purpose. Better2gether is proud to call them partners—and grateful for the joy they bring to children and families across the Richmond area.
