Ann’s Journey with Better2gether
At Better2gether, we are fortunate to have incredible volunteers like Ann, who generously share their time and hearts with the families we support. Ann’s involvement with Better2gether began through her business networking group, Synapse, in 2017, when the group paired local businesses with nonprofits. That’s when she first met Liz Burnett, co-founder of Better2gether. This connection sparked Ann’s ongoing commitment to the organization, which has grown steadily ever since.
Volunteering has always been a central part of Ann’s life, whether it's through schools, her church, or initiatives like organizing a medical supplies drive during COVID-19. She was already an active community member when she was introduced to Better2gether, and her passion for supporting families only deepened.
“Volunteering with Better2gether has given me a whole new perspective on what it means to support families with medically complex children,” Ann shared. “These families face challenges most of us can't imagine, and it’s been humbling to be part of a community that helps lighten that load.”
A Memorable Moment: Connection Through Play
One of Ann’s most memorable experiences volunteering with Better2gether was at a family picnic at Park365. Volunteers were needed to play with the children, giving the parents a rare chance to sit down and enjoy a meal together. Ann vividly remembers one particular child.
“There was a little boy in a wheelchair, and all he wanted was to be wheeled around the park,” she recalls. “That’s what we did—just wheeling him around. It seems like such a small thing, but for him and his family, it was a moment of joy and relief. It reminded me that sometimes the simplest acts can make the biggest difference.”
Making an Impact: The Power of Programs and Services
Ann is also an active volunteer at fundraising events, like the Halloween Hustle, where she often takes on the role of “wrangler,” keeping things running smoothly. For Ann, the impact of Better2gether’s programs and services is clear in the families' participation.
“Not all the families can make it to events, but those who do come really get involved,” she said. “I remember Dylan, a little boy in a wheelchair, and his mom showing up in full Halloween costumes. They were just like any other family, enjoying the event, and Dillon was already planning for next year’s Halloween. It’s those moments that make you realize how special these events are for the families.”
Collaborating with Volunteers and Staff
Working alongside other volunteers and the Better2gether staff, Ann values the strong sense of community and the seamless planning behind each event. “Everything is so well-organized. I can just show up and know that all I need to do is devote my time and energy. The staff takes care of the details, which makes it so easy to volunteer.”
Advice for Future Volunteers
For anyone considering volunteering with Better2gether, Ann’s advice is simple: “Do it! It’s such a flexible and rewarding experience. There’s no pressure—everything is planned so well that you just have to show up and help. My daughter and I attended the Christmas Party last year, and it was such a wonderful experience to be able to give back without worrying about any prep work.”
To Ann, volunteering is about spreading good into the world. “I believe if you put good things out there, they’ll come back to you. It’s about being a good human and making a difference where you can.”
We are immensely grateful for Ann’s dedication and the meaningful impact she has made. Volunteers like Ann are at the heart of Better2gether, helping us continue our mission of supporting families with medically complex children.
