A Day of Respite and Renewal: How Your Support Gives Families the Break They Need

For parents of children with rare and chronic illnesses, self-care often feels impossible. The constant demands of caregiving—doctor’s appointments, therapies, and medical needs—leave little time for rest. Respite opportunities are rare, and many families simply don’t have access to the time away they so desperately need. But on April 12th, thanks to supporters like you and the generous grant from the Midlothian Rotary, twenty families will finally have the chance to pause, connect, and recharge at Better2gether’s Self-Care Retreat at Deep Run Park.

This unique event is designed to fill a critical gap, providing a rare opportunity for caregivers to step away from their responsibilities, even if just for a few hours. While parents take a breath, relax, and focus on their well-being, their children—including siblings—will engage in meaningful, fun activities alongside peers who understand their journey. For siblings, this is an opportunity to spend time with like-minded kids who share similar experiences, fostering friendships and understanding in a way that’s often difficult to find elsewhere.

The day will begin with coffee, pastries, and conversation—simple comforts that remind parents they are not alone. Icebreaker questions about self-care will encourage reflection and connection, as caregivers share their own challenges and tips for managing stress. Then, they’ll have the chance to participate in hands-on, creative activities like Mandala Rock Painting, Diamond Art, and Paint by Number easels—all designed to provide a moment of calm in their often-hectic lives.

Meanwhile, children will be engaged in their own structured activities, ensuring parents can fully embrace their time of rest. Lunch will be provided for parents, while allergy-friendly snacks and drinks will be available for all.

By the time families leave at 2:00 PM, parents will feel equipped, rejuvenated, and cared for—ready to return to their daily responsibilities with a renewed sense of strength. This event is more than just a day at the park; it’s a lifeline for caregivers who rarely have the chance to prioritize their own well-being.

Your generosity makes this possible. Because of your support, families facing extraordinary challenges receive the respite they need to continue showing up for their children with love and energy. Thank you for being part of a community that believes no family should have to navigate this journey alone.
