A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
August draws us closer to Summer’s end and before long many will be transitioning to school, work or daycare. Change is once again upon us all, and Better2gether is not without its own exciting developments.
The Board of Directors gathered to strategically plan ways Better2gether will deepen its commitment to supporting kids with rare and complex illnesses and prepare to meet the growing demand for our services. Families will experience richer programming and engagement opportunities and the partnership with the Complex Care Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU are areas that remain a priority.
Additional changes include hiring Britt Nelson, our new Event and Marketing Coordinator, and rebranding the 5K, now the Better2gether Halloween Hustle 5K | Ghostbustin’ Style on October 29. Strap on your protein pack, it’s going to be a blast! Read more about ways you can sponsor and participate in this inaugural event.
Whether you’re a new supporter or veteran fan of Better2gether, we can’t wait to share what’s next with you. Thank you for your continued support of Better2gether and children with rare and complex medical illnesses in RVA!

Better2gether Virtual Speaker Series for Families
Because of the support of our valued community partners, we’re proud to bring a monthly virtual speaker series to our families which addresses important health topics and issues.
Thank you to the following organizations for their contributions:
- ABLEnow for discussing details regarding how to open a disability bank account without affecting the benefits received.
- CATS for addressing needs related to durable medical equipment, assistive technology, and environmental modifications.
- Sportable for addressing needs related to adaptive sports.
- Anthem for providing
information regarding the Medicaid Waiver, as well as tips and tricks for the best ways to utilize case management.
- Mental Health America of Virginia for talking to caregivers about their own mental health and self-care.
- Read to Them for discussing why their mission is to create a culture of literacy in every home.
- Moms In Motion for discussing service facilitation and information regarding the Medicaid Waiver.
If you’d like to learn more about presenting in our virtual speaker series, please contact Better2gether’s Resource Coordinator, Carissa Russo, at email@example.com.
Reveille United Methodist Church
A big thanks to REVEILLE UMC for making 50 blankets to share with our families! Many adults and youth members of the church participated in creating these no sew blankets which are a true gift of comfort to our kids. Nothing beats a cozy blanket to help stay warm during hospital visits and to make the day better!
Snack Drive Appreciation
Shout-outs to our Complex Care Clinic Kids Snack Drive partners – Colonial Crossfit, JunkLuggers and Remix Market – who collected snacks to help make long days in clinic a little easier for our kids and families. We think you’re all that and a bag of chips!
Junkluggers/Remix Market Community Partnership
ICYMI – We are still grinning ear to ear thanks to Andy Taylor and his team at JunkLuggers and ReMix Market. This company does a lot more than haul away your junk. As their website says, they exist “To enhance lives, our community, and the environment by donating, recycling, and supporting local charities.” That means items don’t end up in landfills; instead they donate items to local charities and fix up the unwanted items and resell them at their bustling store, ReMix Market. Don’t blink as high quality merchandise arrives and leaves daily!
As a true steward of our community, Taylor selects a charity to donate a portion of his proceeds to quarterly. Better2gether is honored to have been chosen to be the community partner of this incredible organization. We appreciate their support and are proud to partner with an organization working to create meaningful change in our community.
